if you use linux, a decent application for bulk image resizing is BIRT (batch image resizing thing). it has a jpeg quality slider for selecting the fiie size/quality ratio (70%) seems to work for me, and it also allows you to prepend/append the _med or whatever to the file names as it saves them.
