Shared Stock Quantities

I've had a look across the forums but can't seem to find an answer that's quite what I need.

I'm trying to set up a confectionary shop for a client but the whole stock thing has me stumped.

To break it down the client has 12 boxes which contains 32 bags and there's 10 pieces per bag. (so that's 12 boxes, 32 bags, 10 pieces= 3840 pieces).

The client wants the stock to be sold as either a box or a bag or, and this is the tricky part, a favour box with 2 pieces.

What I would like is to set up the stock level as the total number of pieces, e.g. 3840, and then have the sales of boxes, bags or favours take their stock from the overall number (the 3840). Is this possible? It's driving me nuts trying to sort this out!

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Are you setting each item up as a separate product or as size of the main product?

At the moment I've set the stock up as individual items within catagories:
An example-
Catagory>Brittle>250g Bag>
macadamia brittle
macadamia brittle in chocolate

Catagory>Brittle>1 case x 10 bags>
macadamia brittle
macadamia brittle in chocolate

Catagory>Nougat>100g bag>...

...and so on.

Does that make sense :-S
