I use XAMPP which is an Apache server on your on computer. Its free, it literally sets itself up in 10 minutes or less and can be downloaded from www.apachefriends.org. It has everything you need , mysql, etc etc.

    Hi

Thanks for that but I tried that one first and the same thing happens.

Also wondering why my post was moved I am not trying to install on a linux/unix server. I run windows XP. Thats why I placed the question in the "Installing on a windows server"

Your post was moved because you are installing an Apache Server. Your computer has a Windows operating system, but Triad is an Apache server, as is XAMPP. If you had the same error when you installed Xampp then it may be that you already had a Windows server (IIS) installed without realising it. XP Home does not come with IIS but XP Pro does come with IIS installed. If this is the case then IIS is probably using the port that Apache is trying to use (Port 80).

Locate the Apache httpd.conf file and edit it so that Apache uses Port 8080 and see if that helps (stop and restart the server for it to take effect).

    Thanks for the reply

Yes I do have XP pro. So I found that file and changed to port 8080. restarted the server. but I now get "this page cannot be displayed" error pretty much straight away, before it would take adges before this error would come up.

I also tried forwarding port 8080 in my router settings. but that diddnt help.

Any thing else I can try ??

    Thanks

Are there any detailed messages in the apache "errorlog" file?

Run a search of the computer for a file called Hosts or hosts (don't think it has a file extension). Windows uses this to register the server/s in use.

    Hi

heres what the host file has in it

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

i found a couple of files with error in the name wich one should i look in most of them had heaps of text in them.
