Insane Query Amount

Hello,

I'm setting up a Scottish Goods site, and many of the products will have quite a good number of different patterns available. After setting up the appropriate attributes, I've assigned a selection of around 450 different tartans (each their own basic attribute) to a product, and I have quite a dilemma:

Does ZenCart simply not handle high numbers of attributes on a product well? Is there a more appropriate way to handle this without splitting the product into "Product with Tartans A-C", etc? I cannot afford to have customers wait two minutes for a single product page to load, regardless of the quality.

Unfortunately large numbers of attributes can create problems in certain circumstances. If it would be feasible to break the kilts into smaller groups it would be advisable.

Zen Cart version 1.4 will take care of this problem. It is due to be released later this year.

Zen Cart releases are always "when ready". Kim's statement above is the most specific that I can remember from a Zen cart team member about when a release would appear!

Unfortunately, that's not the answer I had hoped for. I need a cart that can handle a large number of attributes sooner rather than later. I am quite impressed with ZenCart, as a cart as a whole, not just a "free" cart, but, alas, it is not to be. I can wait until the end of the second quarter, hence my question about availability. It looks, though, that I will need to look elsewhere.

you could also get the host to tune the server a little for you,

this isnt quite as high as your but you can see that the numbers are pretty good for this kinda queries

The attribute-related queries aren't particularly onerous, quite the opposite, so there's no reason to believe that the figures provided by Merlin wouldn't scale linearly for you. As they clearly don't, his suggestion that you investigate your hosting setup would seem to be the most appropriate first step, otherwise it's possible that no cart (even an enhanced Zen Cart one) will deliver the performance that you need.

I have been experimenting with the mysqld variables and have found that I can reduce the time for my 10k+ queries down to about 15 seconds reliably through the use of query caching. If I can further reduce this to under 8 seconds through other variable tweaks that would hold me over until version 1.4 comes out which will in theory handle large numbers of attributes better.

As an update, I am currently running approximately 16k+ queries under 3 seconds. While not instantaneous, I don't think customers will run away screaming...
