Tracking Inventory SIZES?

I see that the shopping cart system tracks inventory as it is purchased. Is it possible for the shopping cart to track (subtract) each SIZE or COLOR (attribute) as it is purchased? My client's last system did this and it's important that I find a solution. Is it possible to do this with the existing system? Or is there a contribution? Any ideas? Thank you for your time!

I am not aware of any opensource(free) script that does this....

There is a module you can add on for stock-by-attribute by kurio that affords some/all of what you might be looking for
