    ****BACKUP THE FILE BEFORE CHANGING*****

    you need to edit the file

    includes\templates\template_default\common\tpl_header.php

    How much of the header are you changing, just the logo, or all of the navigation links

    That would be a Japanese torii gate and you replace it by editing the line in your stylesheet highlighted below to point to your new image
    #logoWrapper{
    background-image: url(../images/header_bg.jpg);
    background-repeat: repeat-x;
    background-color: #ffffff;
    height:75px;
    }

    Please read the tutorials/FAQ for the method of setting up the template overrides or you customizations will be overwritten when you upgrade.
    Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

    Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

    Sounds like your issue is that you are looking in the wrong place. It must be there. Although the torii may be look slightly mystical, the image is very real and so is the code that causes it to be displayed on your site. You just haven't found it.

    Do you have a link to your site, so that we can see exactly where it's located?

    Your stylesheet is
    includes/templates/classic/css/stylesheet.css

    and the styling to which I drew your attention earlier is right there at line 196.

    However, you should take seriously Kim's comments about reading up on using template overrides, otherwise you will be liable to lose any changes that you make.

    Also, even at this early stage you have validation errors creeping in breaking the structure of your site. I'd recommend keeping an eye on them and fixing them as you go.
