Adding text to "add to cart" box

Hello, I'm an obvious newbie here. i wanted to see if someone could help. I've looked around on here and have stared at different files in an attempt to lead myself to an answer. What I would like is to offer non-stock items. All I want is to add a conditional which would input text in or next to the "add to cart" box when the stock quantity is below zero or maybe a given letter code. I was thinking of text like "Special order item" and maybe below that giving and stated ship time such as, "ships within 4-6 business days". I'd hope to think I could resolve this myself, but time is a bit of an issue. So...any help could be greatly appreciated

If the conditions (eg: "ships in 4 - 6 days) are unique to each product, then this looks like it will involve the dbase - as you will have to insert those variables when uploading / editing a product's details.

So you would need to modify the php files that govern product data input, create an input field, modify or add a table in the dbase, and also consider how/where that data is output (in the browser, on confirmation e-mails, etc).

This is, I believe, a complete module in its own right, so you'd either have to code it yourself, or solicit some consultancy in appropriate places in the forum.
