    help question Newbie - Problems Found on System Inspection

    Hi all!

    I'm a first time user of ZenCart, and ANY e-commerce system for that matter. The tutorials and threads on this forum are top quality and I've been determined to get my store running without having to ask for help personally, until now

    My store works perfectly on localhost using XAMMP. My issue is with getting is running 'live'... I've chosen Fasthosts as a host and have an appropriate package with MySQL etc.

    I have uploaded ZenCart exactly as it is in the zipfile you download it in, install directory and everything (obviously), and I have created a MySQL database using my Fasthosts control panel.

    When I run the Zen installer live, everything is checked Green by the system instpector, with regards to what versions of php I've got etc. But I'm getting this:

    ATTENTION: Problems Found
    ERROR - Cannot proceed until problems are resolved.
    *Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'...
    * admin configure.php is not writeable
    * store configure.php is not writeable

    After looking around on here and using what knowledge I do have, I'm thinking the issue is with permissions for the config.php issues. I have heard about CHMOD.

    Please note that when I uploaded the ZenCart files I done it in one massive dump, I did not select special permisisons for any particular file. I'm using WISE-FTP 5.

    The more serious issue seems to be no connection to the MySQL socket. What does thisn mean? I do know that my database is on a secure server thats dedicated to hosting databases.

    Please point me in the right direction and let me know what info you require and I'll post it up.

    I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the ZenCart team and all the 'experts' on here. I've had a lot of fun learning ZenCart. :)

    Regards,
    Phil

    File and Folder Permissions
    In order for many Zen Cart™ administrative and day-to-day functions to work properly, You need to mark several files/folders "Writeable". The following is a list of folders which need to be "read-write", along with recommended CHMOD settings. Please correct these settings before continuing installation. Refresh this page in your browser to re-check settings.

    Some hosts may not allow you to set CHMOD 777, but only 666. Start with the higher setting first, and switch to lower values if required.

    * includes/configure.php = Unwriteable
    * admin/includes/configure.php = Unwriteable
    *
    * cache = OK
    * images = OK
    * includes/languages/english/html_includes = OK
    * media = OK
    * pub = OK
    * admin/backups = OK
    * admin/images/graphs = OK

    Hope this is of some use. Massive thanks in advance to anyone who is willing to shine light on this.

    Regards,
    Phil

    After looking around on here and using what knowledge I do have, I'm thinking the issue is with permissions for the config.php issues. I have heard about CHMOD.
    In your C-Panel, go to the File Manager Screen.

    There, in the menu, you'll probably see a heading "permissions" or "change permissions".

    You need to give your configure.php files WRITE permissions - I use setting 755 during the install, making sure I re-set it immediately after the install to 444.. (Search Google for CHMOD - it's an easy concept to understand).

    This enables the file to be written to - an important step in the install procedure.

    Fix this first, then the dbase issue may go away...

    Oh dear - on further inspection of the responses above, I'm getting the impression that Fasthosts is incompatible If I DO get it working, I'll be sure to write up a full guide and post it up on here.

    Ever get that feeling that you've taken on too much
    Thinking positive though

    Could this be part of the problem?

    Hi Guys,

    I've been on holiday and I'm now picking this back up again.

    Thanks to the guys who posted tips above, I've sorted the issue with changing CHMOD on admin_config.php and store_config.php to allow them to be written.

    During the installation, system checker is now all green apart from one item:

    * Current SQL Cache Folder = C:/xampp/htdocs/zencart/cache -->Unwriteable Click here for more info

    * Suggested SQL Cache Folder = /home/fhlinux159/t/tophattersgifts.co.uk/user/htdocs/zencart/cache

    I understand what this is saying, but I don't know where I need to make a change? Where is the variable that hold the path for my SQL cache folder?

    Apologies in advance as I'm pretty sure it's somewhere obvious.
    Thanks again guys and once I get this up and running I'm going to get 'ZenCart' tattooed on my forehead, and you know you want to see that!

    Regards
    Phil

    That's what it's reading from DIR_FS_SQL_CACHE in your configure.php file.

    This is what it recommends that setting be set to, and what it will use if you proceed with installation.

    i tried for over 6 months to get zencart running correctly on fasthosts and i got nothing but trouble and kicked backs every second. the ssl dont work correct, the html editors dont work correct, the GD libary never worked on fasthosts, i just gave up and moved to camalot hosting as they are zencart certified hosts, and with in 24 hours my site was running perfectly.

    i would recogment you move away from fast hosts as for £10 extra you can have a much better server and much better support from camalot!!
