Stock Control Based on Attributes???

I am been getting familiar with zen cart using the main guide however i still have some basic queries regarding stock control and product info display.

Regarding stock control, how can i specify the quantity based on attribute. For example, i am selling t-shirts in various sizes and i want to specify the stock per size.

I am aware the one way would be to create subcategories for each size but i feel this would not be a good idea. I want the user to select size from a drop down menu. I have 70 t-shirts based on each design but at the same time i have different sizes from small to x-large based on each design. Therefore i will be having 10 in small, 20 in medium, 30 in large and 10 in x-large.

The next issue is how do set the position or alignment of the art to cart button and size drop down menu on the product info page. I am configuring the cart system based on the default zen cart template so will this alignment issue depend on template?

At present, the add to cart and quantity text box appears towards the right. The size attribute drop down menu appears on the far left but below the add to cart box. Attached is the image.

Also trying to figure out how to change the main layout of displayed products on homepage. It appears as one product per row. I want atleast 3 products per row based on all categories and to get rid of the new products display.
