You can change the layout in a wide variety of ways, from editing "tpl_product_info_display.php" to changing CSS to downloading a wide variety of image controllers (see downloads section).
Also, these "additional images" don't have to be tiny - change them if you want to.
You can easily move them elsewhere by editing the relevant template (tpl_product_info_display.php). An example.
I believe that it may be possible to display hovering images for them using Image Handler. You mayt want to checkout of that mod's support thread for more information.
And if you want to push the boat out and do some programming, here's a couple more ways of displaying them differently. The first (soon to be launched) site uses a Flash movie to load a new additional image every 10 seconds, and the second site allows visitors to select an additional image and then scroll through the large versions.

kuroi,
I am honestly short of words, to thankyou after a long time someone has gone in this detail to explain something, realy thankful
regards
mimran
p.s. i do have some questions about the second site link you sent.
firstly in the image section how did you do borders around it? is that all CSS?
secondly down in the information how did you do the tabs?????/ many thanks if you can assist with that
Firstly, although the others are, that site is not my work, I just contributed some pieces to it. However, to answer your questions: the borders around that central section are done with images. In fact they are blocks with gradients rather than borders, with contrasting image blocks laid over the top leaving only the parts showing that make them look like borders.
The tabs were, I believe, written specifically for the client. However, you can achieve the same effect by using QHome's Tabbed Products Pro

Without seeing your site, it's not possible to say.
There are several ways of approaching this. Again, without seeing your site it's not possible to say which would be the most appropriate for you, or to venture an opinion on why what you're trying isn't working.

Hello... I have now tried all your suggestions but these are not straightforward or easy at all - I need a much simpler solution and I need to be able to upload the images in admin via tools and image handler. Can anyone do this ? I am prepared to pay for someone to do this work for me on my site as I desperately need this done. I have a site with a large turnover of images so I need a simple solution.. I hope to hear from someone.. thanks thanks
I really can't image what could be easier that dragging a file from one window to another (FTP) or browsing from the Image Handler page to your additional images on your local PC. But if you really want to pay somebody to reproduce what's already available for free, then please make your request in the Commerical Help Wanted section of this forum.

The only part of this that requires forethought is naming the additional images to go with the base image, and I suspect that's a big hurdle for some people.
I could imagine an interface that allows you, after identifying the product to associate with, to browse and select a random image (or group of images), renaming it to fit with the product's base image before ftp'ing it to the server. I'm not sure if this is practical to do from within admin.
