Editing remote database manually

hi,

I want to set up a large number of options for a particular type of product and have worked out all the front end code to show these in a sensible way to the customer.

I now need to add these to the shop and doing so through the admin tool or through phpMyAdmin will take a long time (there are about 900 options). I want to add the options to the database manually through Open Office Base or something simillar but don't know how to connect to a remote database from my computer.

I have a shared hosting account with access to CPanel and WHM but no direct desktop access.

My question is how do I find out the url of my database (I know the name) and how can I set up Open Office to connect to it?

Just checked through them but they mention localhost but not an address I can use remotely. If i know my domain and database names is there a standard convention that hosts use? The box I need to fill in is labelled Datascource URL

You can try your site's URL and, if that doesn't work, contact your host for an IP of the database server. Your user and logon should get you access. Just enter http://###.###.###.### as if the IP were an address.

I guess you mean http://www.mydomain.com/mydatabasename ?

I used to manually edit databases a few years ago when I first started out as a web designer but never connecected to one so don't know if there is any special kind of syntax.

Tried that but unfortunately I don't know the JDBC Driver Class. Have put in a suppport request. Thanks Anyway.

More than often, you can only connect to a db from localhost for good security reasons. To be able to connect to it from outside, you also need to add the ip of the machine you connect from to "trusted" zone.
