Search Assist while entering search criteria?

I am interested in developing a utility that intelligently suggests potential search term matches as you type them for Zen Cart, having searched the forum it seems to yield no results on this matter.

After a few years of hacking stuff about I know a little bit about PHP and MySQL, but I fear it is something a bit above my ability like Ajax?

I am welcoming any suggestions or pointers in the general direction, however seemingly blunt would be greatly appreciated......

Have you been able to look behind the hood at some of the sites already doing this to see how they pull it off? Amazon.com is one good source.

I see they seem to be using JS (search-js-search_suggest-10585.js) trying to fathom out this file is the trouble now I suppose

Assuming this does what I would like it to, it would appear that our friends over at OS Commerce may be one step ahead of us!
