mass assigning an attribute to all products

Hi there,
Is there a way (either through the interface or through a sql command) to assign a given attribute to all of the products at one.

We have a new attribute that will be rather time consuming to assign by hand to each product.

If anyone has experience with this, any input will help greatly.

You can copy an attribute in one product to another product or to a whole category through the admin interface.
This is quick and simpler than creating something to copy to ALL products. Of course unless you have thousands of categories
