How to tell category_row.php not to add image

category_row.php appears to insert a small gif (pixel_trans.gif) when an image isn't included with a subcategory.
How can I tell it not to?

Since all of my site's images are bordered through the stylesheet, the tiny gif also gets a border which makes them all visible (see attached).

How do I tell the script not to insert the pixel_trans.gif substitute when a category image is not present?

Just a little cosmetics...

admin panel/ configuration/ maximum values/ Categories To List Per Row

1. default is 3
2. change to 5 or 6

I'm already set to 5.
But while I was digging around the category_row.php file I switched the [row] and [col] positions.

$list_box_contents[$col][$row]
This made the subcategories line up vertically (which I wanted). So I think instead a little centering might do the trick.
