MAMP/XAMPP set up local host

I previously downloaded 1.3.8 and never got it to work only one time and could not get it started again. I did not trash that version but installed the unzipped folder for 1.3.8a in the htdocs in a folder called zencarta. In comparing them the in the includes folder there is no configure.php in the new version. As I wanted to make sure osx read write permissions were correctly set.

Couple of problems I can see there. First, you say you did not delete the earlier install? Best to do that. In fact, delete the current one too and start over with a clean, empty, fresh folder.

Second, you say there is no configure.php file in /includes/? That file is called dist-configure.php in the downloaded file set. You're supposed to rename it to configure.php at some point during the install. You'll be prompted to do so. (There's a similar one in /admin/includes/ which is handled the very same way.)

I'm almost there!! I set up the "www.example.com" address and changed the Apache Server Name from Localhost.80 to www.example.com:80.

I type in www.example.com and a screen comes up that says Index of/ and underneath the Zencart/ folder. When I click on that, Zen cart comes up on the screen.

Is there any way to eliminate the Index of/ screen and go directly to Zencart typing in www.example.com or do I have to put in www.example.com/zencart/

Please help.

Just move the contents of your current "/zencart" folder one level up to your Apache's document root (i.e. the IndexOf "/" directory you currently see).

After that, change both your configure.php files to reflect the new directory structure. You might also need to adjust the path to your session directory under Configuration > Sessions in your Admin Console depending on how you configured sessions to be stored when you installed your Zen Cart.

Restart your servers and verify the change.

I followed DrByte's instructions with no problem...but when i move back to the e-start book to the database setup screen, i am getting an error

Connection to Database failed
Access denied for 'root'@'localhost' (using password 'no')

i did put in zencart138 for the database name as that is what i specified in DrByte's instructions...

did i miss a step???

Your problem is likely due to the wrong password supplied to the MySQL database.

MAMP and XAMPP uses different default credentials to login to the MySQL database:

For MAMP, it is:

username=root
password=root

XAMPP uses the following

username=root
password=<blank>

Check both your configure.php files to verify the above MySQL credentials.

I have Zencart Loaded and ready to start. I want to change the mane from localhost/zencart to www.example.com.

I bring up the Termnal.app and type in sudo vi /etc/hosts. It asks me for my password, but I am unable to type it in.

Can someone give me some help on this.

I'm a bit confused. Do you mean you cannot enter the password when prompted or do you mean you cannot change the contents of the hosts file?

If it's the contents of the hosts file you want to change, remember to type the character i after entering your password. This will put the vi editor into Insert mode so you can enter any text. To exit Insert mode, hit the Esc key on your keyboard.

I suggest you re-read DrByte's post again as he has outlined the steps in great detail; including the need to type the i character as I have mentioned above.
