can't get off square 1 with UPSXML

Hi.....
I hate to beg for help so early in the process - but......
I've installed the UPS XML files.
In admin I've entered my UPS Rates Access key, my Account Username, and Password, and defined my preferences.
When I go to my store and select a product to be placed in the shopping cart my cursor spins for ever, and eventually a blank page loads. No error message - so I don't know where to start looking.
I've tried removing the UPS XML files, and reloading - no change.
If I switch back to the default UPS module, everything works normally.
I'm wondering if my UPS Rates Username and Password are different from my UPS Account Username and Password. I don't have any record of a Rates username and password in the slew of usernames and passwords I'm accumulating - but it seems to me that there is some 'handshake' that isn't occurring which is preventing me from getting past 'go'.

Who is your hosting company?
Is CURL enabled on your webserver? That module uses CURL to talk to UPS to get quotes. Maybe there's a problem there?
