I think there may be a bug in the system. I have had the same problem but when I added a second product the problem dissappeared.
Try adding another product! Until then maybe one of the power zenners have an answer!

Not a bug!
Do this
Configuration > Layout Settings > Skip 1-prod Categories > false
Sorry Zen Gurus for thinking it was a bug!
