Default SQL commands creating connection problems?

I am running Zen-Cart ver 1.3.8 and have customized it a lot to match my store features. The only problem I am going through for the past two months is the database connection issue. I keep experiencing very frequent database connection error messages.

When contacted the host, they said everything with the MySQL server is fine and running. They also suggested that I check my SQL commands for any conflict or error.

Is this true? Whether an error in the SQL Strings can cause connection issues? And most importantly, I didn't touch any of the database-related command in the Zen-Cart. If there is an error in the connection strings, it shouldn't work at all, right? But the site loads successfully after some retrys. Is there any such code that can accidentally lock the tables of the database?

    Thank you.

Sounds like a case of "not me!" by your host.

You can check things out by turning on the page parse time under Configuration >> Logging in the admin

Thank you for the reply, dbltoe!

The page parse time seems to be ok with values like 1.453 for the index page and 0.552 for the other pages. The severe problem is that it's not connecting at all at times.

I am just confused by the host's statement. I wonder whether the statement that checks connectivity is having some trouble. Where to find this code that checks the connectivity and that redirects to the error page?

Not being able to see your config, I would first check the database connection to see if it is set to localhost or an IP/URL. If set to localhost, it is something that should never have a problem. If you are going to something other than localhost, ask them to reevaluate the connection.

It's not a localhost anyway. It's an URL for the MySQL server provided by Brinkster. I have hosted on a Windows server provided by Brinkster.

Do anyone have previous experience with this host? You, dbltoe?

If you haven't messed with any Zen SQL, there ain't but one direction to point the finger.

    "Hello, Mr. Host?"
    1. Why am I not using localhost?
    2. What do YOUR error logs show for the connections to the server?

Check your error logs out as well.

    Best of luck.

I didn't mess up with the SQL codes except for installing some mods from the contribution area. Don't know whether those contributions would have done something to the codes.

Anyway, I shall claim the details from Brinkster and shall keep you updated if anything goes well. Thank you!

Yes ... I once was able to get things to run on a Brinkster hosting account, but only for a couple days. Things were so sluggish that it was painful. Their control panel features left a lot to be desired, and their help was pathetic. The client agreed that they didn't want to be on the slow server when they could get better hosting (faster and easier to use) for a lower monthly fee. So, we moved them. Never looked back. I still shiver when I see the Brinkster name.

After nearly three months of fighting back through mails, live chat and Skype calls, finally the Brinkster account has come to a stable point. One week since my last message, the server is steady and seems to serve ok.

Even my client came to a point that we could change the host if needed. But to my surprise, Brinkster's sales team were vigorous and kept promising that things would be set right and they don't want us to leave. I didn't know Brinkster had such a support team who can divert their issues to the sales!

The issue was: Subsequent SELECT requests were ignored by the MySQL Server, for no reason.

    Take care, DrByte!

    DrByte,

If you may help me, I would like to ask, to which host you moved your service? The Brinkster service failed again just after typing my last message. My client is ready to move to a new host.

I can go to one of the Zen-Cart recommended hosts, but still want to hear from you, for your expertise in this domain.

    Thank you.
