Display Catagory Images on Main Page

Is there a way to put top level category image link on the main page similar to the way that the new products for the month images appear in a grid-like fashion? I looked all over in the admin and don't see this option anywhere. I want customers to be able to easily find and click the category they are seeking without having to use the text navigation.

This seems like this should be a no-brainer option.

Hi,
I have done this on my site, but the images are under the text. I would like the category images to be at the top of the page, then the text and then the new products.

I was going to add the ajax image swapper in order to have more photos on my product pages and style them more easily. Can I use the mods you suggest and this one?

Is the "column grid layout" that you suggest the one called "column grid layout for product listing?"

I don't know if Ajax Image Swapper will work with these mods, as I have not tried it.

Is there a way to change the order of the category images and defined text by editing existing files instead of adding another mod? I just want these images above the text.
