Make birthdates optional?

I run a store owned by a middle aged lady with mostly middle aged and old ladies for customers, and apparently it's quite shocking that the sign up on our Zen Cart requires giving away their ages. Is there some way I can change this from a required field to an optional one?

If you want to turn the box off and not see the birthdate:

admin panel/ configuration/ customer details/ Date of birth

1. set to false

admin panel/ configuration/ minimum values/ date of birth

1. set to 0
