zero price in shopping cart if attribute not selected

I've set up a product with two attribute prices
Product price is set to 0.
Product is set to "priced by attributes".
On the main product page everything appears as expected with the "Starting at:" displaying the lower price.
The attribute options are radio buttons neither are selected by default.

Here's the problem:
If the user adds the item to the carts without selecting an attribute then the price in the cart contents is zero.
Is there a way to set the radio button to a default or to set the shopping cart item price to the "Starting at:" price.

I think this is a bug. If the Starting at price is displaying greater than zero then the user shouldn't be able to have the item in their cart with a price of zero.

Using the default button in the attributes controller sets the default value.

Thanks for the update on what worked for you ...

NOTE: an additional solution to ensure the customer picks the "right" attribute is to setup an attribute for something like:

Pick One
What do you want?
etc. etc.

Set that Attribute Option to:
Sort Order: 0
Default: YES
Display Only: YES

Now, the customer has to make a choice as by default they cannot add your defaulted Attribute for Pick one to the shopping cart and you no longer get little Johnny ordering X-Large when he needs a Small ...
