Login to be different than e-mail id

I need solution, where a user when registers, can use his or any name (just name like john, nokia, sony) as user name instead of e-mail id.

If there is any such module, please let me know.

The main problem is that names aren't unique, like email addresses. What do you do when the second person named 'nokia' wants to sign up?

The client wants the functionallity to be like yahoo or google mail. where you just login by the username without the @.....

Same answer - the @ is assumed, since Yahoo and Google are email providers. What happens when stevesh###################### registers, then later stevesh###################### comes along?

We tried to question with the client, but he wants a single name as login No e-mail id.

I doubt there's a mod to do that since the mod would have to check that the ID being entered is unique which is pretty involved.
