limiting Categories images on home page

Can someone tell me how to limit the number of categories images to six on the home page? I found how to set the number of categories displayed per row but not the total number per page. Thanks

You can limit the number of products displayed per page, but not the number of categories. All the subcats of the selected cat will show on that one page (or all the top cats, unless you have selected just one or none to display on the home page).
