how do I sell a completely different set of products according to customers' location

I am trying to do similar to what campusfood.com is doing right now.

Basically, when the customer registers with a zipcode, my website will remember it someway (maybe by cookie). He then will only see a certain set of catagories and products available to that zipcode.

I am not sure whether zoning will work. I haven't looked into it yet. But I hope it could work with zipcodes (smaller regions than states)

I know it might be achieved by setting up a higher catagories for all different locations, but that'll be tremendous amount of work. And it won't be very efficient since most catagories/products avaible to each area are largely identical with small tweak on prices and some specifics.

I am not sure whether it'll work. But I would be glad to hear from you guys possibilities. Thanks a lot!

You might be able to do something like that with the Multi-Site mod and a jump page which directed visitors to the correct installation. It would depend on how many different sites you'd need if it would make sense or not.
