Default PROBLEMS INSTALLING-at my wits end!!!

    Hi,

    I have recently downloaded Zen cart but I am having a huge ammount of problems. I am hosted with streamline.net on a Linux server and have installed all the files to my ftp server using ftp surfer which is fine and I can see all the files and directories on my fpt server. However when I try to access my homepgae I get error messages either;

    The webpage cannot be found
    HTTP 404
    Most likely causes:
There might be a typing error in the address.
If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date.

    What you can try:
    Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

Go to and look for the information you want.

    More information

This error (HTTP 404 Not Found) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but the page you wanted was not found. It's possible that the webpage is temporarily unavailable. Alternatively, the website might have changed or removed the webpage.

For more information about HTTP errors, see Help.

or an error which says the web site has declined to show you the page as this page requires you to log in.
    I have tried every extension I can think of including;

    www."myhomepage"/"my directory"/zc_install
    www."myhomepage"/"my directory"/zencart
and on and on to no avail...everyone comes up with the same 2 error messages either that the page cannot be found or that the website requires me log in and declines to show the page.

Please help I'm thinking of giving up!

Have you read the 1.readme_installation.html file in the docs folder of
    your Zen Cart download?

Streamline.net is about the worst choice you can make for hosting zencart. If you can, get away from that host. You'll need to do major hacks to things like your .htaccess files (and a whole lot more) to get ZC to work - even then, it's shaky!

    Here's how others view streamline.net...

I helped someone try to set up on streamline.net, and I had a horribly frustrating time trying to figure out why things weren't working. After 2 days of getting nowhere fast, we hosted with a trusted zencart host (click the link called "hosting" at the top of this page).

Does your FTP area have a "www" or "public_html" or "htdocs" or "httpdocs" or "wwwroot" folder? These foldernames are the common names for what is referred to as the "webroot", which is where all website content is served from.

Your Zen Cart files (or *any* files to run your website, for that matter) need to be under that folder. If they're not, then you're going to get "not found" errors ... because ... it's not found!

    oh no!!!!!!!!
I am now managing to log into the admin area but the templates (shop or admin) are not working, I'm so frustrated, I wish I had read the streamline posts but now I have signed up with them for a year and I'm unlikley to be able to get my money back.

What do you think? Do you think I should cut my losses and move to another provider and if so how can I transfer my domain name and what's a good value for money, reliable hosting package?

I always look at what my time is worth as well as my aggravation...
If you work really hard at something only to go back to step one because of a hosting issue, you may find that you quit before you really even begin.
Cut your loses.. get a good host and spend more time on the necessary stuff like populating and designing your site. It will take about 24 hours to switch. Also, most hosts have a money back guarantee...
Generally, anyone that makes a comment here has been through the same sort of issue as you and are telling you the truth.. Run, don't walk to your new host so you can start making money.
    Just my opinion.

If Streamline.net had a conscience, they'd refund you the balance of your fee.

Transferring the domain is relatively straight-forward.

E-commerce is not something you want to fool about with - if you're serious about starting to sell online, then your approach must be business-like and dilligent... You owe it to your future customers (may there be many) to offer a robust, reliable, safe and efficient shopping experience.

The recommended hosts understand this, and they will probably "hold your hand" along the way, because they know the program so well and will make sure it works properly for you.

You can't put a "price" to this peace of mind... it can mean the difference between having a successful business... or a hugely expensive wash-out!

Good luck... and use this forum often. It has helped me HUNDREDS of times over the years, and it will do the same for you!
