Default Email errors out, or silently fails

I am running zen 1.3.7 on a fedora linux machine. I have my email through GMAIL apps (I use my own domain not the gmail one) the email account works fine by itself, and outlook can pull messages easily as well.

the issue is I keep getting the error
Email Error: The following From address failed: [email protected]
when using the smtpAUTH function. ( and I have also set Emails must send from known domain? to yes and no, in combination with all transport meathod options)

When email transport is set to anything else, I get the email set successfully bar at the top of the screen, but never receive an email (the welcome, and purchase emails don't work either).

now gmail says to use the following:

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSL: pop.gmail.com
    Use SSL: Yes
    Port: 995

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
    Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
    Port: 465 or 587

Account Name: your Gmail username (including ######################)
Email Address: your full Gmail email address (username######################)
    Password: your Gmail password
now seems pretty strait forward here are my email option settings:

    E-Mail Transport Method smtpauth
    E-Mail Linefeeds LF
Use MIME HTML When Sending Emails false
    Send E-Mails true
Verify E-Mail Addresses Through DNS false
    Email Archiving Active? false
    E-Mail Friendly-Errors false
Email Address (Displayed to Contact you) [email protected]
Email Address (sent FROM) [email protected]
Emails must send from known domain? Yes
    Email Admin Format? TEXT

Send Low Stock Emails To [email protected]

SMTP Email Account Mailbox [email protected]
    SMTP Email Account Password mypassword
    SMTP Email Mail Host smtp.gmail.com
SMTP Email Mail Server Port 587
Convert currencies for Text emails £,£:€,€
seems like it should work right? I've been sufing the forums for a couple hours now and cant find anything that help...Any help and input is appreciated, Thanks!!

When you use SMTP you are at the mercy of that provider and not Zen Cart coding

I understand that there is more than one variable in this process, but I am looking to eliminate a misconfiguration error. and also looking to see if anyone has used this feature with Google's mail feature. If anyones got a suggestion other that can get me closer to an answer I would love to hear it, but unfortunately simply stating it could be a provider issue is not what Im looking for. Thanks for the try tho..

Do you have a SSL Cert for the SSL & TLS encryption?

FYI: sites older than v1.3.8 cannot use gmail for sending without making numerous coding changes.
And, as kobra mentions, gmail requires certain encryption capability to already exist on your server.

Thanks guys, Dr.Byte I appreciate that version info, since I am not running the newest realese. But for your future trouble shooting issues, I found a VERY simple solution:

I signed up for a $2 a month email relay at dnsexit.com , used the folowing settings:

    SMTP
    SMTP Email Account Mailbox username
    SMTP Email Account Password PW
    SMTP Email Mail Host relay.dnsexit.com
SMTP Email Mail Server Port 25

I get to keep Gmail's email filtering and the relay worked 1st time without a hitch!
