Default Should I expect my hosting company to do my upgrades?

in the future it looks like i may have to learn this. i've been through a couple hosts and now with one of the largest online. after install of the zen-cart i got a red bar at the top saying i had to upgrade my datbase patch level.

    this is thier reply -

I have applied the patch level upgrade for you. Please note that in general this is something that falls outside the scope of our support. You will need to learn to upgrade your shopping carts or hire a programmer to do this in the future.

ever hear of it before? is it something the hosting company, "as big as they are" should do? or is it something else I have to learn for future reference?

If you performed a new install of the latest version, you wouldn't have needed a patch, so I assume this was an upgrade?

now with one of the largest online

That makes me nervous - not GoDaddy is it?

In any event, they're right - installations and upgrades are your responsibility. Think of it as 'get to learn' rather than 'have to learn', though.

Not all that difficult - just start reading the tutorials/FAQ at the top of this page.

Any problems, post your questions here in the forums.

One word of advice - never use Fantastico to install Zencart. Do a manual installation and you'll learn a lot of stuff that will come in handy later.

Speaking as a Hoster, installing/upgrading/fixing any 3rd party scripts in not part of the Support Service offered by most any Hoster. Your current Hoster went above & beyond in applying the database patch and speaks highly of their Support.

ok, thanks, both for the compliment on the host, and for the other reply.

i didnt use fantastico for the install, and i didn't upgrade. this was a fressh install with wsftp.

i do thank for the advice on all parts. it's a great cart with fantastic support. i commend you.

i forgot to answer ya'll on the host and i also have another question.
one the host is hostgator, hats off to them, and secondly, which tutorial do i need to be reading on the database error i was getting concerning the patch levels.

i did use the latest version of zen-cart on this fresh install by the way.

The latetest version of Zen Cart is 1.3.8a. If you installed it fresh then imported a previous database, that would explain the database error you received. If that was the case then re upload the 'zc_install' dir. and run the install again, this time choosing "Database Upgrade" instead of install.

Otherwise, search the Form or Tutorials using "database error" or "database patch" and see if anything relative pops up.
