I want to be able to make different versions of the same site so my client can choose which one he wants. Specifically, the only thing that is changing is the menu.

What is the best way to do this?

What exactly do you mean by 'the menu'?

Im going to use the CSS drop down menu mod for one version of the site, the other will use the side box menu.

The catalogue will stay the same as will the rest of the layout and images. I would ideally like it if i could change for instance the background image, and it would update on to both sites.

is this possible?

What you really need is the switcher kuroi wrote for this:

He had talked at one time about releasing it as a mod, but hasn't yet.
