    Default Protx & SSL Query

    Hello,

If I use Protx as a method to take and secure credit card payments, do I still need to purchase a verisign SSL certificate for use on the ZenCart site?

Only reason I ask is that we will be hosting this on ISPConfig control panel software which only allows one SSL certificate per external IP. That will mean any future sites will not be able to use SSL.

I was thinking if Protx does all the securing of details then do we need SSL certificates?

    Thanks in advance.

    Martin

    Absolutely!

The SSL certificate encrypts the information between the customer and your site. The protx module encrypts the information between your site and protx, using Protx's SSL certificate.

If you don't have a SSL certificate on your site as many as 9 in 10 customers won't buy from you as the information they send to you can be seen by anyone!

You can get a SSL certificate for as little as $15 a year so it's worth it! Your host should offer this or be able to add it for you simply enough.

A SSL certificate does also need a static IP for your site but that shouldn't be a problem either, and if it costs you anything, should be no more than $12 a year.

I don't know how your control panel software works, but you need to purchase an IP address and SSL certificate for each site.

If your control panel/hosting package doesn't allow for that then it isn't suitable for your business and you should move now. Don't even think about it. Move now!

    Hope that helps!

    All the best...

    Hi Conor,

First of all let me thank you for your reply. Could you give me an example website where I can get a SSL certificate to secure traffic to a zencart site for $15 per year as the ones i see at verisign are hundreds of dollars per year. Maybe I am looking at the wrong thing?!

    Thanks once again

    Hi,

    Glad to help. :)

We use GeoTrust from theplanet.com which is $49 a year but just searching for "SSL certificate" in a search engine should provide plenty of $15 a year providers.

We've heard that a few people are using $15 a year certificates without any problems but as we haven't used one of these providers ourselves I can't recommend any in particular to you.

    All the best..

    Conor
