password code required to purchase product

Is there a way to require a customer to enter a special code or password in order for them to add the product to their cart?

We have a product that we only want to sell to individuals that have spoken with us over the phone. The product requires a license/certification to use and we dont want random people using it.

You would need to customize quite a bit of code where there could be a look up of the products_id and customers_id for who is allowed to make these purchases ...

It can be done, but there would need to be an interface written in the Admin to manage these products as well as a validation test to know if the product can be added to the cart based on a customers_id ...

That lends towards the need for the customer to be logged in while shopping or to be directed to the login before being allowed to add the product to the cart to test if they are, in fact, allowed to purchase this product ...

Would it make a difference if we had one code required to purchase 10 different products? Instead of focusing on the customer's ability or authorization to purchase a product, can we focus on a products ability to be purchased? Not sure if this is clear....in other words, instead of tweaking the code for the customer, would tweaking the code for the product make any difference? It would be nice to have one password, that worked for purchasing a number of differnet products.

Probably the special code would work easier, but you still would need quite a bit of customization for managing this to limit the purchase of products based on knowing this code or by using the validation of a given customer to make such a purchase ...

Sounds like you want Group Pricing.

Admin > Customers > Group Pricing

This allows you to setup a "Group" and through your own customizing, allow them to see products that others cannot; because they would not be part of the Group. It does requrie that one already have an account and for you to manually shift them to the Group, but might be faster then methods previously discussed.
