Sort order and prev/next display doesn't match

Sort order and prev/next display doesn't match: I have 4 products and I changed their sort order (in admin) so they're purposely out of alphabetical order, but when a customer clicks the prev/next buttons the items are displaying in alphabetical order. I don't want the items to display in alphabetical order, I want the prev/next mechanism to display the products the way I have them set up with sort order. How do I make the prev/next mechanism display my products the way I have them sorted?

I am in the complete opposite predicament.... I want my items to be desplayed in alpha order by name and cant get them to do that. Also when you view the products because they are in the wrong order they do not display all of them. I've been trying to sort through this for an entire day and am still stumped.

I FOUND AN ANSWER: For anyone else who comes across this thread, the sort order for the prev/next buttons can be found here:

admin > configuration > product info > previous next - sort order. Select option 6 (product sort order) to get what I asked for above.

Since my problem is the exact opposite can you please tell me how you had it set to sort in alpha order by name? I have mine set to product name but the sorting order is still random and not in alpha order.

Other sort option is in admin, settings, product listing.
other one is settings, product info.
what a stupid thing. Who wants those to be different? huh..
