I'd like to have sideboxes on both sides on some pages, but switch to sideboxes on the left only when I need to provide a lot of description on other pages.

The 'single column' in Admin - Tools - Layout Boxes Controller is reserved for future versions.
What sideboxes do you want to turn on and off?
