    Default Differences in SSL Certificates?

    Hi!

When I purchase an SSL Certificate I have so far gone for a RapidSSL certificate (OK because it was the cheapest). I now see my provider has Comodo PositiveSSL for less.

Is there any differences between them or for that matter GeoTrust. I thought a secure certificate was a secure certificate was a ..... etc

All 3 are well known - I would be wary of a a BobsSSL Certificate etc. The only other difference I can see is that the more expensive ones have a `live' seal that updates the date and time etc - which is nice but doesn't make the site more secure.

Anyway, I just wanted to check to see if, apart from the price etc is one more secure than the other?

I'm only looking at one site SSLs at the moment, not Wildcard etc.

    Thanks
    Ernie

The main differences would the reputation of the company behind it, how much cover it provides ($s) and whether it covers a single domain or multiple domains (significant if you're using subdomains for different parts of your site).

    Hi!

Thanks for that - I did check and PositiveSSL carries no warranty whilst Rapid carries $10,000 for $3 more per certificate.

On the Rapd site it says, about warranty: 'We want to make it clear that warranty has not been collected on any SSL Certificate, ever'

I am wondering if that means that SSL is so secure it has never `failed' or whether they have just never paid out! Either way a warranty is a `perceived' value to a customer.

    Thanks again

    Checking the site:
    http://www.positivessl.com/

The difference between a positiveSSL Comodo certificate and an instantSSL Comodo certificate is that the positive is domain certified while the instant is full business certified and a lot more expensive.

Does the customer experience differ between the two certs? Do any browsers pop up warnings with the cheaper positve cert?

I plan on using a payment gateway which has it's own certicates for payment processing but can see the value in my own SSL cert for account creation and other times the user enters personal details - just wondering if there's any reason why I would spend the money on the more expensive certificates.

    Thanks.
