Does anyone know a (relatively) simple way to pass Option Name/Value Pairs to the Shopping Cart for inclusion in the Customer order and confirmation email?

I have programatically inserted the User Entered Option Values into the Product Info page using a URL Query String, and I'm thinking that this task is best handled with cookies, but not finding enough information yet, I don't know where to start.

These User Supplied Option values should be stored permanently, so I guess I'm just avoiding a final database solution, hoping that there is already a way to input Option name/value pairs into the database. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Any ideas will be very much appreciated :-)
