403 forbidden, 404 page not found, install problems

Hi all

I am so very new to all of this so bear with me, my questions have probably been asked all over but at 3.45am i am too tired now to search for them all..

anyway..

I have uploaded my fileset to my hosting via ftp to my htdocs directory.. all well there...
I have followed as per instruction the install as set out in the first install, change the permissions as stated "(although i cannot find the file On the server locate the file: /store/includes/dist-configure.php ,i have renamed my zen cart upload to the directory name "store" i can only find the /store/admin/includes/dist-configure.php

after settign all the permissions i then go on to the install for which i shouyld type the path http://mystore.com/store/zc_install ???? i hope i done that right am not sure as i have a 403 forbidden error now and no install is happening !!!!!! ( obviously i have put the correct domain in my browser)

I am no tearing my hair out as i am not sure what i have done wrong.. so any help woudl be appreciated rom anyone who has had this problem or knows anthing about this problem..

ok an update..

i have since re uploaded my fileset and now when i type the path http://mysite.com/zencart/zc_install

nothing happens at all .. i have a blank page !!!!

any ideas

Some servers have odd setups where the .htaccess file in the /zc_install folder gets rejected by the server configuration.
So, sometimes deleting or renaming that file may solve the problem.

Also, checking the web server's apache errorlog (via your hosting account control panel) can often reveal the cause of errors you encounter.

Hi... thanks for the advice..

I have since changed my ftp programme from wise-ftp to filezilla and hey presto everything seems to have gone like clockwork .. am thinking wise-ftp couldnt handle the upload as when i looked into it i may not have had the complete zc_install directory,some files were showong as failed etc...

well one problem solved anyway .. i am now ploughing through alot of reading and setting up of my site ..

A good and stable FTP programme makes all the difference.

FileZilla is very good, WS FTP is even better (in my opinion) but it is not free, and Fire FTP for Firefox is good for both PC and Mac.

I am having a similar issue in which I get a 404 error. I just moved the site from one server to a VDS. I checked in the root of the zen folder and there is no .htaccess file. Can somone please help, I have been at this for two days now...
