cc module doesn't accept Amex or Discover?

The credit card payment module doesn't seem to accept Amex or Discover. I enter a card on step 2 of checkout and get the error:

"The credit card number starting with 3411 was not entered correctly, or we do not accept that kind of card. Please try again or use another credit card."

Granted, I just entered a random card number starting with 3, as I don't have an Amex card handy, but it sounds like that's what everyone is getting when they enter any valid Amex card number.

I found out about it by two customers in the last day saying that it wasn't accepting their Amex card, and I see that indeed all the payments I've received thus far via this payment module have been Visa and MC only. All the Amex payments I've taken have been over the phone only. I process all cards manually and can do Visa, MC, Amex, and Discover, so I would like zencart to accept all four. I tracked down some code in includes/classes/cc_validation.php file and see that it is only set up to accept Visa, MC, Switch, Solo, and Maestro. Are these last three some kind of foreign cards? Any plans to add support for Amex and Discover?

Could you share where you found these options? I am getting that same error for Amex and Discover. They are enabled in my Authorize.net account settings and go through fine through their site. just not through my zen-cart site.

Nevermind. Found it. FYI for anyone else looking:

Go to CONFIGURATION in your store admin and click on CREDIT CARDS. Apparently Amex and Discover default to disabled.

Please add this instruction to the online Zen Cart docs. When your card is not enabled in the configuration setting, logging errors does not show a card was not processed due to this setting. Is that something that needs to be added to the logging function of card processing, or is that outside of what should be logged?

The behavior is intentional. If you've turned off the support for a given card type, Zen Cart will reject it before even submitting the card number to the gateway for processing. This not only gives feedback to the customer much more quickly, but also saves you fees for authorization requests that would fail.
