New Layout/changing look

Got a question. I have a site that my customer wants redesigned.

I redesigned the site and now need to spice it out and switch it up.

What steps would everyone suggest doing to make sure all the links work and the database works, etc.

I was thinking work locally and then replace the template. I am not sure here, never started a redesign from scratch.

If the current site is up todate file wise - 1.3.8a

Then create a new DB and a folder like /test

Make a proper DB backup and copy all the files to the test folder - apply the DB backup to the NEW DB

Editr the 2 configure.php files to reflect the new folder location and the new DB details

You can now redesign away
