Can I make my ZC site invisible to the public?

Is it possible to make my shop invisible to the public and also to disable public registration?

You can create "private" stores, yes.

You could password protect the folder and in answer to your second question have a look in Configuration >> Customer Details specifically:
Customer Shop Status - View Shop and Prices
Customer Approval Status - Authorization Pending

You could easily just put it in a directory with an obscure name and do not create links to it.

Also, you could put it in a directory, and password protect it with htaccess, or use your web host control panel to password protect the directory.

Simple enough.
