Impact of New Fields on Customer Table

Im considering writing up a module for ZC, but I would need to add a field or two to the customers table. What sort of interference would this create for other stock modules that touch the customers table? I would think that this shouldn't matter, but Im concerned that something would expect X number of fields(and only x number of fields) and then go boink.

A well-written mod would either allow for other changes to the table it uses (as long as they don't affect fields the mod uses), or just not be affected in any way by other mods. If you can make new fields that are unaffected by other mods, then other mod writers should be able to do it too.
