Categories Separator between the Category Name and Count (1.3.8a)

I've just noticed some strange behaviour regarding the category/count separator (found in Layout Settings).

1 - The separator is only displayed between the category name and count of categories with sub-categories. Sub-categories and Categories (without subs) don't appear to have this separator displayed. Is this correct? If so, maybe the admin description needs to be changed as it's a little unclear.

2 - When setting Show Category Counts to false (from My Store) the category separator is still displayed.

Something -> (12)

Categories with Products have:
Something (12)

Now why can't I phrase it like that!

Is a bug or should Zen Cart behave in this way?

It is suppose to work that way to show a distinction ...

I turn off the counts as it slows things down ...
