Hiding subcat from category sidebox

Is it possible to add subcategories, but keep them from being listed in the categories sidebox?

I have several subcategories within a subcategory. I want them to display on the main page for the subcategory but I do not want them listed in the category sidebox.

I have a category for "poker chips" with subcategories for "with denominations" and "without denominations". Within each of these, I want to be able to group poker chip types into subcategories listing the different colors/denominations on the product listing. But again, I do not want these types showing up in the sidebox.
