Adding a user to a MailChimp newsletter?

So, first things first.. I can't really claim to be a wizard at PHP coding.

What I would like to do though is use MailChimp for our store's newsletters. My thought is that at store checkout or when a customer registers for the site that they should be able to click a box and it automagically would send their email address/name to MailChimp and sign them up for newsletter subscription.

Note: I still believe the customer should have to double opt-in (ie. confirm via email that they really *do* want to sign up for the newsletter before they receive anything from me), but it seems daft that they should have to enter their name and email address a second time for my store's newsletter when my store already knows it!

Any thoughts on how I could do this? I looked at the MailChimp API and went kind of white with fear...

This feature doesn't exist yet. I'll do some more MailChimp work later this year; meanwhile, start with the MailChimp sidebox from the downloads area.

Thanks for the reply swguy. I see you've written some MailChimp addons for ZenCart so you obviously know what you're talking about, more than I do.

I guess I'm still keen to do this for my store now though rather than wait for an addon. (Your MailChimp sidebox addon, although very good I'm sure, doesn't really satisfy my requirements as it requires people to enter info about themselves that they've already told me once before)

I'll carry on digging around and experimenting unless anyone else has any good ideas..

Graith Internet has written an add-on for OSCommerce which may be able to do the trick on Zen Cart with a little tinkering:
