Require UPS 2nd Day Air based on Category of Item

OK my store is running Zen Cart 1.3.8a.

If someone purchases items belonging to specific categories, those items MUST be sent by UPS 2nd day air, with a surcharge.

All other categories the customer may choose UPS 2nd day air or UPS ground.

This version of Zen Cart does not support this. Is there a way to make this work? This is kind of time-critical; the client was using rather terse and vehement words about this.

I would be very grateful for any assistance.

In the UPS shipping module you will see the code for:

        if (!in_array($type, $allowed_methods)) continue;
        // EOF: UPS USPS
        $methods[] = array('id' => $type,
                           'title' => $this->types[$type],
                           'cost' => ($cost + MODULE_SHIPPING_UPS_HANDLING) * $shipping_num_boxes);

You can add other tests to control when the $methods[] is added on to based on the current $type being processed and disable them or add on the the charge etc.

Please forgive me...I am new to modifying Zen Cart's internal files. I am not used to this; I write straight-through PHP scripts that are often self-contained in one file and don't contain classes.

* What is $type?

Here's my dilemma:

* The client is a gun shop.
* All handguns MUST be shipped UPS 2nd day air, as required by law.
* All other items have the option of UPS Ground.
* Zen Cart doesn't natively support this requirement, so people are buying handguns and choosing (and paying for) UPS Ground.
* The shop still must ship 2nd day air.
* Therefore, they lose about $20 per handgun sold online.

They want a way to ensure that those who buy handguns MUST have their orders shipped 2nd day air.

There isn't a category called "Handguns" in the shop; the 1500-some guns are categorized by manufacturer.

Is there anything specific that can be tested for in the products table to determine if a Product is a gun or not?

Example:
products_model
master_categories_id

etc. etc. or can you add in a new field that can be used to mark what products are guns and which are not?

You mentioned manufacturer ...

Are all Products from specific manufacturers_id "only" guns and "never" any other kind of Product?
