Default Changing Categories Menu to <ul>?

I've begun customizing my Zen Cart for a client. I really need to have the Categories Menu be a standard CSS-driven <ul>.

I've looked at the Category Dressing code, plus a couple of sidebox mods, but haven't quite yet grasped exactly how to go about making my Categories Menu into a <ul>.

Can anyone give me some specific examples or point me to some code?

    TIA for your suggestions!

    Can you elaborate on Why?

Good question. It really has to do with the way I design sites.

To my way of thinking (which is admittedly subjective), a menu is basically just a LIST of related items, semantically.

A group of links has no inherent structure.

So, for most effective, logical design where structure and presentation are handled separately, menus should be LISTS (for structure), styled with CSS (for design)

For this site, the top categories will probably never change, once set. So, even a non-dynamic Categories menu would work out OK.

Why not just use Categories Dressing? You can turn off any of its features that you don't need, and have the flexibility to do any kind of <ul>-based styling you want. There is a bunch of work in making the subcategory/active/products/etc. class tags that you won't need to repeat.

Yeah, that's the answer - thanks. I went back and had another look at it. I guess I was looking for something more "obvious."

I have been pretty successful in getting about 90% of my ZC installation modified to look like what had been a client's basic design - in one afternoon. I had been avoiding the menu until now.

This afternoon, after I get the menu done, I'm going to see how much fun I can have loading their 30K-item db into ZC!

    Thanks again!
