How to create a coupon/discount code during Checkout?

I have read in the forum some scattered information about a coupon code mod. But, I did not find anythign much about anyone using a coupon code mod to any success. Is there a new mod or another way to create a coupon code for the checkout cart. I know I can issue a site discount, but I want to employ the effective marketing strategy of issuing a coupon code to "select" individuals. I'm not looking for a "workaround" but a reliable, working way to issue a discount code during checkout.

Do you have some rules for this automatic coupon issuance? Exactly how do you want this to work?

Here is example. I have a blog I want to promote my site and offer a 10% coupon to blog readers. That reader will go back to my site, select a product, then inthe checkout process, there will be a coupon code box that will discount the product by the amount I set that particular coupon for.
