How to add message "spend £ more for free postage"?

I've noticed that a few of the big sites I shop on have a automatically generated line in the shopping cart which calculates and displays how much more the customer needs to spend to qualify for free postage.

As this tends to encourage me to add an extra item to the basket (I like free stuff - who doesn't) I'd like to be able to add this to my zen cart store.

Any ideas how to do this - I'm thinking it should be fairly simple to compare the shopping cart total (before shipping) with the free shipping rate (currently set at £50) and display a message such as

"Spend £x.xx more to qualify for FREE postage" based on the difference.

If you are over the free postage limit it could then display

"Congratulations you qualify for FREE postage" or just not display anything.

(I'm using zen cart 1.3.8 with no extra modules added)
