Which XAMPP version should we now be using?

The Zen Cart Manual says "Because Zen Cart officially works with
MySQL version 4.x, we will need to download an older copy of XAMPP instead of the latest one available."
But that was written some time ago, and the latest Zen Cart works with MySQL 5.0.45.
So which XAMPP version should we be using? Anyone know?

You can use the XAMPP version recommended in the book for Zen Cart versions up to v1.3.8a.

If you would like to use the latest version of XAMPP, look out for some changes you might need to make to get the software working properly according to the book. The problems/workarounds are found in the forums. Some useful search keywords would include 'XAMPP', 'Mercury', 'port conflicts' and probably 'MySQL 5.0' too.
And XAMPP versions using PHP 5.3 will NOT run Zen Cart v1.3.8a properly.

However, do be prepared to spend some time/effort in locating any potential problems if you deviate from the XAMPP version recommended in the book.

i have a follow up question to this question.
i also gotten the book. If i follow the book and install xampp v1.4.16, i assume it works fine with zen cart v1.3.8a. But, what happen once im done testing my site and needs to transfer to a host server? i assume they will have newer version of php, mysql, etc? will it still works or i have to find a host server that host that version according to the book? (sorry im new. still trying to get the whole process down)

To use v1.3.8a, your server will need to use PHP 5.2.x or lower.
