In our 'women's category, I'd like to change the header image to reflect more feminine colors. Can I change the header image for just this one category? Would it require a new template?

Smart Backgrounds (in Free Addons) is designed for this sort of task. You can use it out of the box to switch background images etc anywhere in your site, or adjust it to handle foreground images in a particular location.
Alternatively, you can use a separate stylesheet for that category, named like c_23.css for category cPath 23, and include the different header background image in it.
Smart BG is easiest where you have numerous backgrounds to switch, and the stylesheet is easiest where you have only one page to switch for. Some things like individual ez-pages can be handled by Smart BG but not by stylesheets without a code modification.
I will check it out. Thank you!
I got it to work just great. Thanks!
I have a similar need and wanted to check to see which method is better for what I need to do.
I'm setting up a storefront for a distributor who handles multiple brands. Each brand will need it's own category and then get it's own associated header image, etc.
There are potentially 4 different categories that will need their own brand-specific treatments. What is the best way to handle this?
Either method will work fine; this is a matter of personal preference in this case.
