After installing the security patch, the admin area still says "New Version Available v1.3.8a :: Important Security Patch". I thought these warnings go away if the patch has been installed. Yes? No?

Yes, if the patch is installed properly. Check to make sure you installed it to admin and not the cart.

Yes, everything is in the admin directory. 4 new files and 1 modified file.

If you're running a version older than v1.3.8a, then it's still going to tell you the new version is available, even if you've applied the patch ... because ... the message is correct.
