home page customized!!

hi all again,

i am trying to edit the look of my home page. to someting like :

i understand to have a big banner on the homepage i can add it in the ezpage as a image (correct me if i am wrong)

and change the layout out the featured products by adding border.

how can i edit the add border and design, is it solely through the css?

please correct me and guide me
